The Tamar and Tavy Gig Club was formed in 2003 by a small group of local residents to create an opportunity for local youngsters to get out on the water and take part in a healthy outdoor activity. We are now a well-established and friendly club with members from all walks of life and we cater for different levels of rowing experience and fitness.
We row traditional Cornish Pilot Gigs and we pride ourselves on helping to preserve this important part of our local heritage: our two wooden gigs, Ginette & Tamar, were both built by a local boat builder. Gig rowing is a team sport and we row throughout the year with dedicated sessions for ladies & men, veterans and “supervets” crews and a thriving junior section. Our racing crews train hard and compete all over the southwest but we also have regular social rowing sessions, picnic rows, and we organise many rowing adventures further afield including the Thames Great River Race, Scotland’s Caledonian Canal, and Ramsey Island in West Wales.
Now more than ever, the benefits to both physical and mental wellbeing of healthy outdoor exercise and a closer connection to nature are really important, so if you are looking for a new challenge, a new way to keep fit, or just want to enjoy the tranquillity and wildlife on the river, why not give gig rowing a try.
Tamar & Tavy Gig Club love to welcome new members to our purpose built facilities at Weir Quay, and regularly run free taster sessions where you can just come and have a go.
